I’ve had the pleasure of working with Roy for many years, first as a food and nutrition teacher and then as part of the education team at the British Nutrition Foundation, which he led with commitment and vision before taking on new challenges after 26 years. Through his time at the Foundation, Roy was instrumental in driving our education work and building the reputation of the Foundation to become the UK’s leading support body for school food education.
Throughout his career, Roy has been proactive in seeking out opportunities to support teachers and their pupils. From the development and review of the Core competences for children and young people aged 5-16 years (A framework of skills and knowledge around food, diet and physical activity), and Frameworks for food teaching in primary and secondary schools (developed with Public Health England and the Department for Education), to Characteristics of good practice guides for teaching food and nutrition in primary and secondary schools and to pupils with additional needs.
More recently, Roy has worked with the British Nutrition Foundation as Curriculum Design Lead, and then subsequently Lesson Creator, to develop a new Design and Technology: Cooking and Nutrition curriculum, along with 108 KS1 to KS2 lessons, for Oak National Academy. Roy is continuing to support the dissemination of the curriculum and lessons through the Oak – Food curriculum to classroom CPD programme run by the British Nutrition Foundation and funded by the All Saints Educational Trust.
Roy’s role in supporting food and nutrition education across the UK has been recognised by the Trustees of the Design and Technology Association who awarded him the Excellence Award for Outstanding Contribution to Design and Technology 2022.
Roy’s dedication to improving food and nutrition education across the UK is evident in every aspect of his work. He is highly experienced, knowledgeable, extremely efficient and can be completely relied upon to do a great job.
